MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a black comedy-drama about the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who finds herself at odds with her family due to the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of her group counselor, the VA (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the frivolity of an unexpected lover, Merita’s cozy, dysfunctional friendship with Zoe isolates the couple from the world. Until Merita’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s lake house, loses his bearings and needs the one thing he’s denied him: help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a torn family, and the complex ways we process grief.
