MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy about the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), an American veteran of Afghanistan who is at odds with her family due to the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her fallen best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of her VA group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the lightness of an unexpected romance, Merit’s cozy but dysfunctional friendship with Zoe isolates the pair from the world. Until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris) — holed up in the family’s lakeside home — loses his way and needs the one thing he refuses… help. At its core, this is a film about a complicated friendship, a broken family, and the complex ways we process grief.
